TECHNICAL THEATRE OUTDOOR WORKSPACE
John Burroughs High School | Funded Fall 2017
John Burroughs High School has very active performing arts programs with a full schedule of shows and productions throughout the school year. These productions are supported by the school’s Technical Theatre students, who needed a safe and effective space to deepen their learning of stagecraft elements. With funds from the school’s Tech Theatre Program, Drama Program, Vocal Music Program, and Principal Deborah Madrigal, the school was able to begin building an outdoor work space to accommodate the needs of the Tech Theatre Program.
To complete the project, the JBHS performing arts groups applied for a grant from Burbank Arts for All Foundation to support the purchase of a tool shed to store and organize supplies and equipment. According to JBHS Vocal Music Director Brendan Jennings, the new shed will have lasting impact on the program:
“With the purchase and set up of a tool shed, we have already seen a more welcoming, organized, safe, and comfortable work space for the students in the Technical Theatre and Performing Arts programs at John Burroughs High School, as they learn set building and striking. We do anticipate the long term impact of this to be greater skill development and increased student ownership of the creative process in design and building. Additionally, gaining these skills provides crucial work experience necessary for future employment in the industry.”
