Burbank, California – May 9, 2012 – The inaugural ‘Party on the Plaza’ gala event, held at the Networks Garden Café Plaza on Friday, April 27, 2012, was a resounding success to a sold out crowd of over 300 folks. The emotionally charged evening brought in more than $137,000 for the Burbank Arts For All Foundation. The funds will be distributed through future grant award cycles supporting visual, media and performing art programs that will impact Burbank’s 15,000 students.

Hosted by NBC4 Weathercaster Fritz Coleman to an enthusiastic crowd, the evening paid tribute to Business Leader Warner Bros. During the “Raise Your Hands For the Arts” fundraising portion of the program, Filmmaker and Honorary event Co-Chair Don Hahn stood up on behalf of his fellow event co-chairs Dick Cook, Tim Burton and Garry Marshall and contributed $1,000 dollars each for this extremely worthy cause.

Burbank Arts For All Foundation Co-Chairs Alexandra Helfrich and Craig Murray said, “We are extremely pleased by the overwhelming show of community support at the inaugural event. But our job at Burbank Arts For All Foundation is just beginning. We’re on a mission to show Burbank students how much more we can do to make a difference in their lives — you get a child involved in visual or performing arts and that child’s life is forever changed for the better. We have many more programs to fund and an endowment to raise in order to ensure that arts education remains a priority in our schools for years to come.”

“It is a fact that quality arts education programs are essential building blocks for the next generation of innovative leaders and decision makers, not to mention ensuring the next generation of the entertainment industry here in Burbank,” stated Fritz Coleman. “Studies have demonstrated how visual and performing arts have helped students learn many valuable skills – from creative expression, confidence and tolerance, to time management, preparation and critical thinking.”

“We are so thankful to everyone from business leaders to art supporters to parents to our generous sponsors who all helped make the evening a smashing success,” added Burbank Arts For All Foundation, Director of Development, Trena Pitchford. “But this is the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot more we can offer our Burbank community. We will be building on this success through our community outreach, our membership and business partner program and our endowment. The future is bright and I am thrilled to lead the Foundation into new areas of growth.”

ABOUT THE AWARDS AND RECIPIENTS:

Patron of the Arts Award: Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc.
Honored for establishing the Foundation, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. received the Patron of the Arts Award which is presented to a local business or corporation whose support has made a significant impact on the Foundation’s mission.

Award was presented to Lisa Rawlins, Warner Bros. Senior Vice President Public Affairs, by Laura Zucker, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and director of the Masters in Arts Management Program at Claremont Graduate University.

Zucker said in presenting the award, “In 2006 Warner Bros. Entertainment spearheaded the creation of the Burbank Arts for All Foundation, providing board leadership, in-kind donations, a $300,000 seed grant and annual grants of $25,000 to ensure the success of the Foundation. Due in large part to their support, the Foundation has awarded more than $150,000 in grants from 2006 to 2012 to the school district for a wide variety of instructional programs in dance, music, theatre and media and visual arts, as well as professional development for teachers.

Arts For All Educator Award: Beth Morrison
This award is presented to an educator who dedicates their own personal time to enrich the lives of all Burbank students through their exceptional commitment to furthering arts education for all.

Beth Morrison, a highly regarded and gifted fine arts teacher at John Burroughs High School, was honored with the Arts For All Educator Award for going above and beyond instructional work. She teaches her students that by leveraging their talents, interests, passions, and time, individually and collectively, they can make very positive contributions to the world… and that art is a powerful vehicle that has the potential to change the world. She has introduced her students to fundraising for important causes through their artistic endeavors that have helped raise thousands of dollars in funding for numerous organizations including The Keep A Breast Foundation (a model and inspiration for their Breast Cancer Awareness projects), the Susan B. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer research, St. Joseph’s Breast Health Center and other breast cancer related organizations. Her students have also raised money for the Burbank Arts For All Foundation. She collaborates with many core subject teachers at JBHS so they can better integrate visual arts into their curriculum. She also enjoys working with kids and adults involved in the BYSTI program over the summer. A frequent grant recipient, Ms. Morrison embodies the spirit of Burbank Arts for All Foundation by continuing to give back to students in Burbank schools through arts education.

Beth was presented the award by highly acclaimed children’s author David Shannon.

On receiving her award, Beth said, “This honor is especially meaningful to me because the Burbank Arts For All Foundation truly understands and values the vital role that the arts play in the complete educational experience of our children.”

Champion of the Arts Award: Barbara Miller
This award is presented to an individual or organization whose volunteer commitment to providing equitable access to the arts has made a significant impact on the students of Burbank Unified School District and the Burbank community.

Honored for her tireless dedication to the advancement of the arts in the Burbank community, Burbank PTA Council President, Barbara Miller, will receive the Champion of the Arts Award. She is an invaluable resource and works with the California State PTA to follow legislative and budget changes regarding all areas of education and in particular the arts. This dedicated mother of three also serves on the BUSD Facilities Oversight Committee, the Superintendent’s Finance Advisory Committee and the Burbank Arts for All Summer School Advisory Committee. Her dedication bridges the mission of Burbank Arts For All Foundation and the PTA and she was instrumental in both organizations becoming Allied Agencies. Through Mrs. Miller’s on-going commitment to arts education as well as her untiring volunteerism efforts, she continues to be an extraordinary advocate for Burbank Arts for All Foundation.

This honor was presented to Barbara by Burbank Arts For All Foundation Co-Chair Alexandra Helfrich.

In receiving her honor, Barbara paraphrased Bruce Springsteen and stated, “Our kids don’t have time for us to be ‘Waiting on A Sunny Day’ to start volunteering, we’ve got to ‘Take this moment into our hands… because I believe in the Promised Land.’”

The mission of the Burbank Arts For All Foundation is to generate long-term, broad-based financial support to ensure equal access to high-quality arts education for all students in the Burbank Unified School District.

In 2005 Burbank became an Arts for All school district, establishing itself as a leader in rebuilding and strengthening arts education in all Burbank schools. Arts for All is a model program that will make the arts a consistent and reliable part of our children’s education, but it requires support from the entire community. In 2006 a coalition of business professionals, community leaders, parents, and educators mobilized to create the Burbank Arts Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts as part of a comprehensive education from kindergarten through high school. For more information on Arts for All, download the L.A. County Regional Blueprint for Arts Education here.

Board of Directors

The Burbank Arts For All raises money throughout the year, and provides grants twice a year to the District, Principals, Teachers, Arts Coordinators, PTA groups, and others that have applied for funding for programs that will further the implementation of the Burbank Arts for All Strategic Plan, which you can download here. The Foundation raises funds by soliciting direct donations from parents of Burbank students, Burbank businesses, the general Burbank community, and from the City of Burbank. Our main fundraising event is the fall Downtown Arts Festival (which the Foundation will co-sponsor for the first time in 2007), which draws more than 30,000 residents to the Downtown area. For more information, see the Events page.

In order to create a long-term, sustainable source of funds for the Burbank Unified School District’s arts education programs, the Burbank Arts For All Foudation has established an Endowment Fund. Our goal for the Endowment is $10 million in 10 years, which will, in time, provide a constant stream of funds to support the Burbank Arts for All Strategic Plan More than 95% of all funds donated will support arts education in Burbank, with less than 5% of our budget spent on overhead and administration, and small grants ($500-$5,000) allocated twice yearly to support new and existing programs.

Why Our Students Need Your Help

All too often, the arts are one of the first disciplines to be cut from our children’s curriculum. Even here in Burbank, the heart of the entertainment industry and a center of creative expression, funding for music, dance, theatre, and visual arts has been chipped away over the last 20 years. The impact of the arts on learning is clear, yet arts education has been under-funded, overlooked and under-appreciated. Until now.

Why Donate to the Burbank Arts For All?

Burbank schools have a number of fundraising organizations, and it can be confusing for people to determine how to allocate their funds. For parents in particular, there is a natural focus on supporting only the activities and schools that their child attends. However, the Foundation’s endowment and annual grants support arts education for ALL students in the District, and we hope that everyone will help share the burden.

Burbank Arts For All is a 501(C)3 Non-profit Organization. Your donation to Burbank Arts For All is fully tax-deductible.

Federal Tax ID # 20-5128863
